A few days ago we witnessed a new rupture in the Perito Moreno Glacier. We know that it is a unique phenomenon in the world and that it attracts visitors from all over the world. Undoubtedly, one of the most representative postcards of our country.

With an area of ​​726,927 hectares, Los Glaciares National Park is the largest in the National System of Argentine Protected Areas. It was created in 1937 as a Reserve and in 1945 as a National Park with the aim of preserving an important area of ​​continental ice and glaciers, the southern Andean-Patagonian forest and the Patagonian steppe. In addition, it is one of the most visited parks in Argentina.

Both the ruptures and detachments of the glacier are unpredictable and can occur at any time, but the summer months are the time of year where it is more common to see them and enjoy them with all the senses.

When is the best time to see landslides and ruptures?

The ideal season to visit the park is spring, summer and early fall. That is, from September to April.

How to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier?

There are different ways to visit and feel the National Park. Hikes, navigations, minitrekking on the glacier… the excursions are adapted to all types of travelers and their interests.

Recommended excursions:

1. GLACIAR SUR – PIONEROS

This excursion is aimed at people who want to enjoy the natural environment of the glaciers without the need to make significant physical effort such as minitrekking.

The journey begins on the old route of Estancias until entering Los Glaciares National Park, where you can enjoy privileged views.

In the afternoon, the South and Rico arms of Lake Argentino will be navigated, with views of the Adriana and Moreno ranges.

We disembark at the Playa de las Monedas, to take a pleasant walk through the forest. Finally, we will enjoy the Perito Moreno Glacier seen from the viewpoint of the South Glacier.

2. GLACIARES GOURMET en Crucero María Teresa

From the beginning, the trip holds pleasant surprises. In the morning, we will arrive at Lake Argentino heading northwest, Punta Avellaneda and Boca del Diablo -the narrowest pass of the lake, with a width of approximately 800 meters-, at the Spegazzini Glacier and we will disembark at Puesto de Las Vacas -Bay of the Spegazzini Canal- where there will be a walk coordinated by our team of guides,

Lunch will be served during the navigation and we will continue towards the channel of the icebergs.

The scene of this navigation is the walls of more than 50 meters high, ancient deep blue ice and majestic icebergs. Undoubtedly, an excellent way to enjoy nature in all its magnitude.

3. SAFARI NAÚTICO

This navigation, which departs from Puerto Bajo Las Sombras, offers the possibility of observing the impressive walls of the Perito Moreno Glacier and its continuous landslides on the waters of Lago Rico from a totally different perspective.

4. NAVEGACIÓN RÍOS DE HIELO EXPRESS

Ideal for lovers of navigation!

Boarding is in Puerto Bandera. Once on board we will navigate through the North Arm of Lake Argentino until we reach the Upsala Channel, there, if the location of the icebergs allows it, we will approach the wall of the Glacier.

Then we will navigate the Spegazzini Channel, where we will be able to observe the Dry Glacier, until we reach the front of the Spegazzini Glacier, the highest in the National Park.

5. MINI TREKKING

This excursion is ideal for people who enjoy nature, adventure and want to live the experience of walking on the most impressive glacier in the world.

This is an all day excursion. It begins with a navigation inside the National Park and a walk to the ice zone. Once there, each passenger will receive the appropriate equipment and a safety talk will be given.

The walk is of medium difficulty and the journey over the glacier lasts approximately one hour and a half (1:30 am). Once on the glacier and with the crampons on, the world takes on a new perspective: blue lagoons, deep crevasses, huge sinkholes, magical caves, and the unique sensation of being in the center of the glacier. Undoubtedly, all these secrets of the glacier cannot be observed in any other way.

After the walk on the ice, we will enjoy the exuberant Patagonian Andean forest and a guided tour of the glacier walkways. From here, you can take in the spectacular panoramic view of the glacier and follow one of the self-guided trails.

It is worth remembering that Los Glaciares National Park is a World Heritage Site and is the third largest concentration of ice in the world, after the North Pole and Antarctica. It is estimated that the surface of the glacier is equivalent to that of the city of Buenos Aires.
