If you are one of the people who like to take advantage of every minute of their travels, this article will interest you. If you also want to know or return to the south of Argentina and you are planning your getaway, even more! We are going to tell you what to do in 3 days in El Calafate: places and excursions that you cannot miss.
Day 1: Argentino Lake
Located in Santa Cruz, the last Argentine continental province, the city of El Calafate is located on the western margin of Patagonia, rising on the southern shore of Lake Argentino. Its proximity to Los Glaciares National Park makes it a strategic point to explore and enjoy this incredible natural space.
The beautiful Lake Argentino has several characteristics that make it unique: it is one of the 20 deepest lakes in the world and the largest and southernmost on the continental shelf. In addition, its waters receive the melting of three giants: the Perito Moreno, Spegazzini and Upsala glaciers .
The lake itself is worthy of admiration and being so extensive it offers several options. In principle, you can walk along its shores, breathe its fresh air and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the place, and even take advantage of it to do some bird watching. If they are lucky they will be able to see some specimen of Moorish eagle and condor, typical fauna of the steppe.
You can also opt for the various navigations on Lake Argentino . These cross the northern arm of the lake and reach different glaciers, whose ice walls rise up to 130 meters above the water level. Safety pin!
Day 2: Los Glaciares National Park
The city of El Calafate , also known as Tierra de Glaciares, owes its fame in large part to being the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. Only 80 kilometers separate visitors from the great spectacle that everyone awaits: the ice giants.
To arrive by land on this second day, we can travel Route 11 that borders Lake Argentino until we reach the curve of sighs, which welcomes those who for the first time will contemplate the endless grandeur and beauty of the Perito Moreno glacier.
Once inside the National Park, you can choose different excursions. One of them is the ” Nautical Safari ” navigation, where you will be able to appreciate different views of the Perito Moreno glacier wall. After passing through the port, you can access the famous walkways and balconies. These offer an unmissable experience of proximity to the glacier from where it can be admired in part of its great extension and photographed.
With luck and depending on the time of year they will be able to witness some detachment, a wonderful and unforgettable show.
Day 3: Outdoor Adventure
For the more adventurous, a visit to El Chaltén cannot be missed. Traveling about 200 km through incredible landscapes and stops at panoramic points, we arrive at this beautiful enclave, a town in the middle of forests, glaciers and mountains . We do a trekking and hiking in the area with a lunch included.
Another recommended option is the Cerro Frías activities. Ascent by trekking, 4×4 or horseback riding, any option will offer unmissable panoramic points . To the south, the Torres del Paine on the Chilean side stand out, to the west the Magallanes peninsula and to the north, Cerro Fitz Roy .
These are just some of the many combinations to travel 3 days in El Calafate. Come meet them!
