El Chaltén, national trekking capital

El Chaltén, located in the province of Santa Cruz, is one of the most visited places in the Argentinean Patagonia. Although it is a relatively young town, the potential of the region is unparalleled. El Chaltén, located in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park and crowned by the imposing Fitz Roy peak, is considered the national trekking capital.

Located only 220 kilometers from El Calafate, El Chaltén is an obligatory stop in any circuit through Patagonia. The route that joins both tourist spots is considered one of the most beautiful in the country due to the dazzling views of the Fitz Roy and Torre peaks, both exceeding 3,100 meters high.

El Chaltén is one of the natural wonders of the Argentinean Patagonia. The lush and imposing landscape is a constant invitation for those who love nature and outdoor activities. There it is not only possible to walk through dozens of trekking circuits, but it is also possible to do activities, such as sport fishing, recreation, horseback riding or walking on ice. Also, El Chaltén is a place visited by expert climbers, who challenge themselves at least once in their lives to climb the steep Fitz Roy and Torre peaks.

Why is El Chaltén the national trekking capital?

Trekking is the most common practice in El Chaltén and the reason why thousands of tourists visit the region year after yea.

El Chaltén and Los Glaciares National Park are crossed by many trails and trekking paths. Most of them are well signposted and with a lot of control and care by the park rangers. It is always recommended to consult with them about the circuits authorized according to the time of the year and the areas suitable for camping.

The trails that lead to the Cerro Torre viewpoint and the Capri Lagoon are very common. From the Capri Lagoon, you can get the best views of Fitz Roy and you can even take magnificent photographs of the reflection of the mountain on the lagoon.

The most famous trekking is the one that leads to the top of the Torre Glacier. It is an intense hike of about 8 hours on average in which it is necessary to have specialized equipment because much of the ascent is on the glacier itself (special equipment is needed to walk on the ice). This hike is recommended to be done with a tour guide.

There are many trekking options and trails in El Chaltén. Not all of them require a tour guide, special equipment or high mountain training. In fact, most of the trails can be done without problems and with the whole family.

As always, the most important thing is to get information before trekking. It is important to plan the route and make sure that it is adapted to your needs and capabilities. It is also important to travel with comfortable and warm clothes and appropriate footwear. You should also carry a first-aid kit in case of emergencies, sunscreen and enough water.
