5 unmissable winter centers to visit in Tierra del Fuego

Visiting the end of the world is an unforgettable experience. Have you ever imagined living an adventure in the snow? In this article we are going to tell you which are the 5 must-see winter centers to visit in Tierra del Fuego.

1. USHUAIA SKI SCHOOL in the Martial Glacier

It is located in the upper area of Ushuaia, 7 km from the center. Although the Martial Ski Center is not working, therefore neither is its chairlift. But at the base is the closest and cheapest place to the city to learn to ski or snowboard. There they offer classes and equipment rental. For those who already practice these sports, they can use the Martial ski slope; since the chairlift does not work, there is no charge for a pass but they must walk up.

At the base is the Mountain Refuge and the Martial Cabin, two options for lunch or a snack.

The following Winter Centers are located in an interior valley oriented from West to East, crossed by RN 3. The road is asphalt and quite busy since it is the only land access to Ushuaia. We recommend hiring excursions, regular transfers to Cerro Castor or if you are renting a car, we recommend having experience driving in snow and ice. Also, do not leave without first checking the conditions of National Route N 3 that day.

2. GREATEST LAND

It is located 20 km from Ushuaia on RN 3. It is the oldest Winter Center in the province, founded in 1976 by Gustavo Giró Tapper. He was an Argentine explorer who participated in Operation 90, the First Argentine Land Expedition to the South Pole, in addition to being head of several Argentine Antarctic Bases.

When he retired in 1971 he settled with his family in Ushuaia where he was one of the promoters of Antarctic tourism and winter activities there.

Today Tierra Mayor is managed by Gustavo’s daughters. It is located in the Valley of the same name, has a restaurant, and you can do cross-country or Nordic skiing, in addition to taking classes and renting equipment and sliders (sleds). They can also enjoy snowmobile rides.

This place is well known for hosting one of the most important and traditional winter events in Tierra del Fuego: the White March, World Loppet (cross-country ski races) and Ushuaia Sled Dog Race. .

3. NUNATAK

This place is located a few meters from the previous one since it is managed by one of Giró’s sons. Here there are combined excursions with dog sledding, snowmobiles and snowshoes. They have daytime, full day or night excursions where they have dinner in a mountain refuge with guitar playing in the heat of a campfire.

4. PLAINS OF THE BEAVER

It is located at kilometer 3033 of RN 3, about 23 km from Ushuaia. In winter it offers the Panorama Blanco excursion in the morning that combines a snowmobile ride, dog sledding and snowshoeing and ends with a hot lunch at the on-site restaurant with good mountain cuisine.

Another option is to do Silencio Andino, an excursion that begins at approximately 6:00 p.m. and you can combine the 3 activities and also end with dinner at the Llanos restaurant.

5. CERRO CASTOR

It is located 26 km from Ushuaia. Its tracks are located on the slopes of Krund Hill. Not only is it the southernmost alpine ski center in the world and the largest in Tierra del Fuego, but most of its slopes are located less than 600 meters above sea level.

This place has 12 lifts, 34 ski slopes with different levels of difficulty. For those who practice snowboarding, Cerro Castor offers a park of 4 hills for jumping, an area with “doobies” (mini hills) for beginners and boxes and rails for those starting out in Freestyle.

It has ski and snowboard classes, equipment rental, daycare for the little ones and 8 gastronomic spots with local dishes.

In recent years, an outdoor ice skating rink and a track for Nordic or cross-country skiing have been added.

Finally, Cerro Castor has 15 cabins at the base of the winter center, surrounded by a Fuegian forest environment.

The most important event every season is the Torch Descent when the winter season opens in early July. But due to weather conditions, Cerro Castor can operate between the end of June and the beginning of October, being the longest ski season in the country.

This winter Ushuaia is breaking records in the number of visitors and places to do winter activities are very limited. We recommend that you book your excursions in advance so that you don’t run out of space and enjoy the snow at the End of the World.

The experience of visiting the winter centers is lived by hiring the Fuegian lakes excursion. Check before hiring because the winter center will stop.
